  Glucosamine Chondroiton for Elbow Pain
Tennis Elbow and Glucosamine
Tennis elbow is one of the most frequent injuries suffered by both professional athletes and armatures alike. Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the muscles and tendons of the forearm caused by twisting the wrist frequently or repeatedly rotating the forearm. Tennis elbow can cause pain in the elbow, weakness of the grip and damage to connective tendons in the upper arm. A couple of studies have shown that traditional Chinese acupuncture is effective in treating tennis elbow.

In one randomized, controlled study conducted in Germany, the researchers compared forty-five patients and treated them for tennis elbow with acupuncture and with fake  acupuncture treatments. The study found that sham acupuncture was not nearly as effective in treating tennis elbow as acupuncture that is done in the traditional Chinese method. In the traditional Chinese acupuncture, the needle is inserted in very specific areas of the body based on a thousand years of experience and study.

In this study, twenty three subjects were randomly placed in the experimental group which received the tennis elbow acupuncture treatment in the traditional Chinese way and twenty-two subjects were randomly placed in the control group who received tennis elbow acupuncture treatment in the fake or sham way. The study lasted ten weeks with two treatments a week given. Six needles were used in each group at each tennis elbow acupuncture treatment. In the group that received tennis elbow acupuncture treatment in the traditional Chinese method, the needles were placed in very specific locations that were recommended by traditional Chinese acupuncture practitioners. In the group that received tennis elbow acupuncture treatment in the fake way, needles were placed randomly but always at least two inches from the traditional acupuncture points.

The researches recorded changes in the level of disability, level of strength and the intensity of pain experienced by each person being studied. They measured these things before starting tennis elbow acupuncture therapy, after two weeks of treatments and then after two months.

Although both the patients receiving tennis elbow acupuncture in the traditional way and those receiving tennis elbow acupuncture treatment in the fake way stated that they had better function and less pain at the end of the study, those that received tennis elbow acupuncture treatment in the traditional Chinese method had more immediate and pronounced results.

The reason that this study is important is because tennis elbow tends to flare up when the patient goes back to work or exercise after using conventional treatments such as rest, topical medications, local anesthetics and steroid injections. When tennis elbow acupuncture treatment is given, however, the painful and persistent problem of flare ups after recovery can be effectively relieved.

In another study, presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in San Francisco, it was suggested that tennis elbow acupuncture treatment not only gets rid of the symptoms of tennis elbow but actually seems to completely cure it.

Dr. Peter Dorscher, a medical doctor certified in acupuncture gave the tennis elbow acupuncture treatment to twenty two patients using rounded acupuncture needles using French energetic meridian therapy. The patients received between two and ten treatments. On average, it only took 3.9 treatments of tennis elbow acupuncture therapy until their symptoms disappeared. In addition, the relief from symptoms lasted much longer than is usually seen in patients with tennis elbow that use traditional treatments such as braces and painkillers. At eight and a half months following treatment, seventeen (77.3%) of the patients had no symptoms and were able to resume normal activities. Two of the patients were able to resume normal activities except heavy lifting with the arm that had tennis elbow.

The patients in the tennis elbow acupuncture study had all suffered for an average of eight months, some as long as two years with tennis elbow before trying acupuncture and almost all of the patients had tried various conventional treatments without success before trying acupuncture. Dr. Dorscher seems to think that the acupuncture works well for tennis elbow because it relieves the muscle tightness around the elbow joint right away. It works in both the early and late stages of tennis elbow. Dr. Dorscher now treats tennis elbow with acupuncture primarily because of its excellent effectiveness.

If you do decide to treat your tennis elbow with acupuncture, make sure you are dealing with a skilled professional acupuncturist. You should experience relief from pain and better arm function after only a few treatments and unlike in conventional treatments, your tennis elbow will be less likely to flare up after resuming normal activities.
