  Supraspinatus Tendonitis: Tendonitis of Shoulder

Supraspinatus tendonitis (also known as rotator cuff tendonitis) is a tendonitis of shoulder that results from a tearing and swelling of the supraspinatus. The supraspinatus consists of the muscles and tendons that hold the upper arm in the shoulder joint.

Supraspinatus tendonitis can occur as a result of injury, overuse, or with aging as the tendon loses elasticity. Athletes who participate in sports that require repeated over head arm movements (pitching in baseball, swimming freestyle, butterfly, or backstroke, lifting heavy weights over the shoulder...) often experience tendonitis of shoulder area.

The Arthritis Strategy Pack is a safe and effective tendonitis of shoulder remedy. While Arthritin addresses the immediate pain and inflammation reduction needs, Buffer pH works to address the root cause of symptoms.

Arthritin supports the body’s own natural pain killers, endorphins and enkephalins, while also reducing inflammation. Arthritin contains complete glucosamine structures and chondroitin sulfate, combined with anti-inflammatory phytomedicinals, amino acids and other herbs and nutrients. This powerful formula is more effective than other brands or than any one ingredient by itself.

The key to this chronic tendonitis treatment is Buffer pH to balance pH levels in the body. An imbalanced pH effects all cellular activity, which can lead to a whole host of degenerative diseases and symptoms. An overly acidic body can inhibit the exchange of nutrients and waste products in your muscle cells and can also cause muscles to constrict. Muscle fatigue, soreness and poor recovery follow.

Overuse is the most common tendonitis of shoulder cause. People beginning an exercise program or increase their level of exercise can experience symptoms of tendonitis of shoulder. The tendon is unaccustomed to the new level of demand, and this overuse will cause an inflammation and tendonitis.

A tendon is a tough yet flexible band of fibrous tissue. The tendon connects muscle to the bone. When a tendon becomes inflamed, movement will become painful. This condition is called tendonitis, which literally means inflammation of the tendon.

Supraspinatus tendonitis can be caused by a number of factors. Some of the more common factors associated with tendonitis of shoulder include:

  • A sudden increase in the intensity of training.
  • A rapid increase in the frequency of training.
  • Poor core strength.

Tendonitis of shoulder symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness along a tendon, usually in proximity to the shoulder joint.
  • Pain is worse with movement or activity.
  • Pain at night.
  • Tenderness and swelling over the bit where the tendon inserts onto the shoulder bone.
  • Pain when you try to move the shoulder against resistance.
  • Stiffness after exercise.

The goal of treatment is to relieve pain and reduce inflammation of tendonitis of shoulder. Often, rest, ice and home care pain relievers are all that's needed.

The goal of rehabilitation should be designed to decrease the symptoms and strengthen the muscles. The person with tendonitis of shoulder must return to sports activity carefully and slowly. Criteria for resuming full physical activity should be based on function, not time.

Inflammation can also be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Advil. These medications can be helpful treatments for supraspinatus tendinitis but do have side effects. Side effects of these medications can include stomach upset and bleeding problems.

Prevention is the best treatment for tendonitis shoulder issues and bicep tendonitis. The key to avoiding problems such as supraspinatus tendonitis is to slowly increase the intensity of your exercise, vary the types of activities you perform, and try not to cycle between periods of activity and inactivity. Follow these guidelines to prevent or prevent the recurrence of tendonitis of shoulder:

  • Do not train hard when muscles are stiff from a previous workout.
  • Introduce new activities or new training levels gradually.
  • Allow ample warming up and cooling off time.
  • Monitor yourself daily for signs of fatigue. If fatigued, give yourself a break for the day.

Proper conditioning should include aerobic fitness, lower body strength training, and lower body flexibility training. Flexibility is very important in preventing overuse injuries such as tendinitis of shoulder.

If you experience tendonitis of the shoulder, you are more likely to have symptoms again down the road, but with an intelligent approach to your exercise or activity routine, this problem can often be avoided.
