Looking for pain relief? Throw out that bottle of
Tylenol and turn on "I Love Lucy." That's right - I Love
Lucy and have a good belly laugh.
Laughter as good medicine is more than an old wives
tale, or a verse in the Bible. ("A cheerful heart is
good medicine.." Proverbs 17.22) Modern medical research
has found that laughter actually protects against
disease and relieves pain.

Tendonitis
The benefits of laughter run the gamut from decreased
stress hormones to a home remedy for tendonitis relief
to lowering high blood pressure and heart health.
What happens when we laugh? There are many physical
changes. Muscles stretch throughout the face, neck, and
body; respiration increases; pulse and blood pressure
rise. All these actions put more oxygen into the
bloodstream. Laughing is like a mini-workout without the
work. It is just plain fun.
Laughter is thought to release endorphins into the
brain. Endorphins are produced in our bodies occurring
naturally in the brain and bloodstream. Endorphins are
similar to the narcotic morphine in their functions.
They act by locking into receptors in the nervous system
for chemicals that transmit pain message to the brain.
Once the pain causing chemicals are blocked, they are
prevented from transmitting their messages.
Two recently released studies from researchers at the
University of Texas-Austin at the annual meeting of the
American College of Sports Medicine in May 2009
demonstrated the benefits of laughter.
Get Rid
of Tendonitis Pain for Good
A
report was of a test run on 17 healthy adults ranging in
age from 23-42. Those adults watched either an half hour
documentary or an half hour comedy in separate sessions
a day apart. Blood flowing through the carotid arteries
– the main arteries that bring blood to the face and
brain – was measured. Blood flow improved with laughter
while watching the comedy, and remained at a higher
level for 24 hours. Blood flow remained the same from
watching the documentary.
One report was of 10 healthy adults who watched either a
documentary on Nazi death camps or a comedy. Researchers
found that there was more relaxing of the blood vessels
from the comedy and that the depressing documentary was
harmful to the vascular system. Blood vessels of those
watching the death camp video had increased constriction
of about 18%.
Endorphins reduce the sensation of pain making it a
great home remedy for tendonitis relief or a natural
treatment for bursitis. Endorphins interact with the
opiate receptors in the brain to reduce our perception
of pain, similar to the drugs codeine and morphine.
Unlike morphine and codeine, the body’s release of
endorphins does not lead to addiction as those
substances may.
