Enjoying an Active Life |
|

Frequent bouts of knee arthritis flare-ups were so painful, I would cry walking a short distance. I am now pain-free, back to an active life, and not worrying about the harmful effects of the Celebrex the doctor prescribed and other NSAIDs. I'm also saving lots of money."

Most people know that illegal drugs are a
danger to health and longevity. People should also know
that legal prescription drug side effects also pose a
danger to health and longevity.
Study upon study clearly shown the
adverse drug reaction danger of prescription drug side
effects. Below are a sampling;
-
In
one year, an estimated 2,216,000 hospitalized
patients had serious adverse prescription drug side
effects and 106,000 had fatal prescription drug side
effects. (JAMA, April 1998)
-
The
drugs most frequently responsible for adverse
prescription drug side effects deaths are diuretics,
calcium channel blockers, nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and digoxin.
(Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Dec.
2002)

Each
year, approximately 107,000 individuals are
hospitalized for gastrointestinal complications
derived from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
These figures do not include gastrointestinal
complications occurring in patients taking
over-the-counter NSAIDs. (American Journal of
Medicine July 1998)
-
Individuals who used NSAIDs in the previous week had
a 2-fold increased risk of hospitalization for
congestive heart failure, compared to non-users. In
patients with a history of heart disease, use of
NSAIDs was associated with a 10-fold increased risk
of hospitalization for congestive heart failure.
(Archives of Internal Medicine, March 2000)
Get Rid of
Arthritis Pain for Good
-
Gastro-intestinal NSAID-related morbidity is
responsible for a minimum of 105,000
hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths occurring each
year in the U.S. (Archives of Internal Medicine,
March 2000)_ Almost 14 percent of children admitted
to the hospital develop an adverse drug reaction. Of
those, 93 percent of the adverse drug reactions were
dose-dependent. (International Journal of Clinical
Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Oct. 1998)
-
The
results a two large studies reveal that hospital
medical errors kill an estimated 44,000 (based on
one study) or 98,000 (based on the second study)
Americans each year and injure an additional 1
million people. These figures are hospital errors
only and not include errors from other settings such
as outpatient clinics, retail pharmacies, nursing
homes, home care, and day-surgery clinics.
(Institute of Medicine, Nov. 1999)
-
Based on the more conservative figure of 44,000
deaths per year, hospital medical errors kill more
people than breast cancer, AIDS or traffic
accidents.
-
In
another study, the incidence of serious prescription
drug side effects was 6.7 per 100 patients and fatal
prescription drug side effects was 0.32 per 100
patients. Extrapolating this data to the entire U.S.
population revealed that in 1994 alone, over 2.2
million patients experienced a serious adverse drug
reaction and 106,000 died from this complication.
These are conservative estimates, since they don't
take in consideration possible adverse drug reaction
errors in drug administration, patient
non-compliance, overdose, drug abuse, therapeutic
failures and injuries and deaths occurring in
nursing home patients. (JAMA, April 1998)
-
Of
over 5,000 medication orders reviewed, medication
related problems were identified in every 15
medication exposures. Dosing problems (33.5
percent), prescription drug side effects (20.7
percent), and an indication that was not currently
being treated (13.5 percent) were the most common
medication related problems. (Nurs Times, Dec. 2003)
Pain, discomfort and health symptoms are
warnings to a problem. Prescription drugs do not cure
the problem but only mask or suppress the symptoms. If
you employ healthy lifestyle methods, exercise regularly
and address the cause of arthritis, there is no need to
treat the symptom with potentially dangerous
prescription drug medication.
