If you wonder how to decrease uric acid
in your blood in an effort to decrease gout symptoms,
diet is the key. With a gout prevention diet, you aim to
avoid high uric acid vegetables, fruits, meats and other
food sources.
Gout’s main characteristic is increased blood levels of
uric acid, with an increase in uric acid production
greater than that excreted. It is the high level of uric
acid that cause the repeated attacks of acute arthritis
known as gout.
During initial stages of this form of arthritis, gout
usually is confined to a single joint. Over time,
chronic arthritis may develop, affecting and deforming
multiple joints. The arthritic disease begins after the
age of thirty.
Obesity increases the risk of gout for both men and
women as it does with other forms of arthritis. Research
shows that about 50 percent of those with gout are at
least 15 percent above their recommended weight.

Gout Pain - Naturally and Immediately
What exactly is gout, and why is it associated with an
overstuffed man in an overstuffed chair with a huge
bandaged toe elevated on a hassock? In the past, gout
disease was known as a rich man’s disease because it
seemed to be connected with the rich foods and lifestyle
of the upper classes. Today gout is often linked with
men who overindulge in alcohol, but also could be a
woman consuming large quantities of red meat. However,
gout is more common in men than in women.
Gout comes in two types - primary and secondary. With
primary or inherited gout, an increase in the production
of uric acid by the body leads to elevated uric acid
levels in the blood. A reduction of uric acid excreted
in the urine usually also occurs.
With secondary gout, high blood levels of uric acid may
be caused by a wide range of ailments from chronic
kidney failure to cancer to multiple myeloma to
psoriasis. Cancer chemotherapy, with the rapid
destruction of body cells, can lead to the production of
the chemical precursors of uric acid and this can cause
gout.
Uric acid is a waste product derived from the breakdown
the amino acid, purine. Normally, uric acid is dissolved
in the blood and eliminated from the body by the
kidneys. When this process goes awry, gout results.
An
acute attack of gout begins when sodium urate crystals
are formed in the body and deposited into a joint and
the surrounding synovial membrane. The body responds to
this by sending white blood cells to the area as part of
its immune response. The white blood cells overrun the
crystals. When they do they release a number of chemical
substances that cause inflammation. This produces the
acute arthritic attack.
The urate crystals also can cause problems in the
subcutaneous tissue, bones, tendons, and kidneys. When
urate crystals accumulate, they create lesions called
tophi. When tophi form within and around the joint, they
can greatly damage the joint and lead to chronic gouty
arthritis. In addition, excessive uric acid excretion in
the urine can lead to the development of painful kidney
stones, possible kidney damage, and even kidney failure.
Researchers have found that avoiding purine rich foods
can be an effective gout treatment. One study found that
healthy men could cut their blood levels of uric acid in
half by eliminating all purine rich foods. Foods with
the most purine are meats, organ meats and baked goods
with yeast. Other foods to avoid are gravies, broths,
herring, fish, sardines, mussels, dried beans, lentils,
peas, spinach, oatmeal and alcoholic beverages.
Studies show that men who prefer beer as their adult
beverage of choice have a higher chance of developing
gout than those who do not drink beer. One study found
that 41 percent of a group of gout sufferers drank more
than seven 12-ounce cans of beer daily, compared to 17
percent from the healthy control group. The reason? Beer
contains not only uric acid raising alcohol, but also
fermented yeast - a double no, no. Some researchers say
that eliminating alcohol is all it takes for gout
prevention in some people.
