When you go on a diet to lose weight, you take it for granted that you will be kissing those donuts and junk food favorites goodbye. If you have been diagnosed with gout, a common form of arthritis, it’s critical that you avoid certain foods - the foods that cause gout problems.

Instead of avoiding just the “bad” junk foods, you will also need to avoid even some healthful foods that may aggravate your gout. Since high levels of uric acid cause gout, it’s important to avoid foods that increase those uric acid levels in the body, foods often called “purine foods.”

If you have gout, some of the specific foods to avoid are tea, coffee, cocoa and chocolate. Even though it’s tempting to eat foods such as chocolate, you need to avoid the temptation unless you want to deal with a painful gout attack.

Also, if you learn to recognize the foods to avoid with gout, you will need fewer anti-gout drugs. Some of the items you don’t need to put on your list of foods to avoid with gout include white rice and other foods low in purines.
