Glucosamine Treatment for Arthritis Pain Relief
Glucosamine as an Arthritis Pain Relief Treatment
Annually Americans consume more than one billion capsules of glucosamine, glucosamine sulfate and/or glucosamine chondroitin sulfate for arthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin  have become two of the nation’s best selling supplements and are by far the most widely recognized nutritional supplement for arthritis.

And for good reason.

Glucosamine is effective in treating arthritis pain, rehabilitating cartilage, renewing synovial fluid, and repairing joints damaged by arthritis. These glucosamine claims for arthritis treatment are backed with numerous medical research studies proving glucosamine effectiveness.

The credibility that these scientific studies shed on glucosamine and chondroitin has warmed even the conventional medical community, which is notoriously skeptical of nutritional supplements as treatment for medical conditions.

Glucosamine - The Basic Building Block of Cartilage.

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance found in the connective tissues of the body, including the cartilage that covers the ends of bones in the joints. Glucosamine, an amino sugar produced by the body, is the basic building block of cartilage, joint fluid and other connective tissue.

Having ample glucosamine is essential for producing nutrients needed to stimulate the production of synovial fluid. The synovial fluid lubricates cartilage and keeps joints healthy.

Healthy cartilage needs water for lubrication and nourishment, proteoglycans to attract and hold water, collagen to hold proteoglycans in place and chondrocytes to clean away toxins and produce new proteoglycans and collagen.

Glucosamine is a source of nutrients for the synthesis of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans and a stimulant to chondrocytes. Glucosamine is a key factor in determining how many proteoglycans are produced by the chondrocytes and is needed to spur chondrocytes to produce more collagen and proteoglycans.

Simply put, glucosamine is a necessary element of joint health, function and repair.

The amount of glucosamine created by the body decreases with age which in turn compromises joint health. Without enough glucosamine, the cartilage loses its ability to effectively regenerate itself and act as the joint’s shock absorber. Cartilage deteriorates, hardens and forms bone spurs, deformed joints, and limited joint movement. The lubricating synovial fluid in joint spaces becomes thin and watery.

It is best to supplement with glucosamine at the first signs of arthritis or before to prevent cartilage degeneration, arthritis and pain.

Glucosamine in sulfate form is the most readily absorbed by the body. Glucosamine sulfate is the form used in scientific research studies.

Glucosamine is similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and has anti-inflammatory effects. Glucosamine also demonstrates a protective effect on the cartilage, can inhibit the breakdown of cartilage and has the potential to help build-up cartilage.

Chondroitin - The Joint Hydrator.

Chondroitin is also a naturally occurring substance found in the connective tissues of the body, including the cartilage that covers the ends of bones in the joints.

Chondroitin provides the structural components of the cartilage, ensures the necessary hydration for joint mobility and serves as a conduit for nutrients to flow through the cartilage.

There are fewer studies on chondroitin than glucosamine but studies performed on chondroitin  suggest that chondroitin may slow cartilage breakdown and even spur cartilage growth. Studies also show that chondroitin work as an anti-inflammatory and reduces pain.

Side Effects of Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate.

Glucosamine supplements are generally well tolerated with few side effects. A recent glucosamine study showed that less than one percent of study participants experienced side effects of glucosamine. The side effects of glucosamine reported are intestinal gas, stomach upset, heartburn and/or loose stool.

People with diabetes or allergies to shellfish should consult their physician before taking glucosamine supplements. People using blood-thinning medications should consult their physician before using chondroitin.

Glucosamine supplements are derived from chitin (shellfish). People with allergies to shellfish should consult their doctor before taking glucosamine. Although most shellfish allergies are caused by proteins in shellfish and not chitin, a carbohydrate, an allergic shellfish reaction is one possible side effect of glucosamine.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar and can theoretically lead to increased blood sugar in people with diabetes. Clinical studies of glucosamine do not support that. However, it is always best that people with diabetes consult their physician before using glucosamine sulfate products. People with diabetes using glucosamine should check their blood sugar levels more frequently as a precaution.

People using chondroitin in conjunction with blood-thinning medication or daily aspirin should have their blood clotting time checked more often. Chondroitin is similar in structure to the blood-thinning medications. The combination of chondroitin and blood-thinning medications can cause bleeding in some people.

Children, pregnant women and women breastfeeding should also consult their doctor before using glucosamine, chondroitin or any other over-the-counter supplement.
