Self Care for Muscular Trigger Points
Since humans have felt pain, they have searched for ways to ease or eliminate pain. Some of the alternative therapies for pain management of fibromyalgia such as acupuncture and chiropractic care are the same treatments used thousands of years ago.

Historians say acupuncture or needle puncture has been practiced in China for more than 4,000 years. The Chinese believe acupuncture, based on traditional Chinese medicine, began during the Stone Age.

The Chinese depict acupuncture with the character 'Chen,' which translated means “to prick with a needle.” Using very small needles on certain points of the body, acupuncture practitioners restore the proper flow of energy under the skin, which may help people with fibromyalgia symptoms.

Experts say acupuncture can help control pain associated with fibromyalgia. While acupuncture is not a cure, recent studies have confirmed that fact that acupuncture is a useful treatment for patients with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia patients typically make anywhere from weekly acupuncture visits to one visit once every 10 weeks. Experts with the National Institutes of Health say acupuncture, when used to ease the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia, may be effective.

Eliminate Fibromyalgia Pain Immediately

Another one of the most frequently used forms of alternative therapies for people with fibromyalgia and other forms of chronic pain illnesses is chiropractic care.

Just as acupuncture to ease the pain associated with fibromyalgia is now new, chiropractic care has been around for a long time. Writings from China and Greece written in 1500 B. C. refer to spinal manipulation and the maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Today, spinal adjustment or manipulation is a method used in chiropractic care to treat restricted spinal mobility and help people with fibromyalgia.

The Greek physician Hippocrates, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., wrote about chiropractic care, saying, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” He understood thousands of years ago that humans could ease pain such as the pain many people with fibromyalgia experience. The goal of chiropractic care then and now is to restore spinal movement by manipulating the spine from different positions.

If you are suffering with fibromyalgia and are worried chiropractic therapies or acupuncture may be painful, there is no need to worry. Indeed, many chiropractic practitioners use massage to relax the muscles experiencing spasms. Still, there are risks involved and therefore, if you are suffering with fibromyalgia always see a licensed chiropractic or acupuncture practitioner.

Numerous studies have shown chiropractic treatment may be beneficial for people with fibromyalgia in terms of relieving the symptoms.

Get Rid of Fibromyalgia Pain for Good

One preliminary study looked at a treatment period that included 30 sessions of deep pressure massage to tender points in the muscles and spinal manipulation. Sixty percent of the patients improved sleep, reduced sensed of fatigue and experienced significant pain reduction. Amazingly, the positive results lasted for one month following the 30 sessions. However, people who did not show an improvement after 15 treatments did not tend to experience the same long-lasting benefits.

Acupuncture produced a significant decrease in pain along with important biochemical changes measured in the blood of the patients with fibromyalgia according to the results of one preliminary trial.

Finally, one study looked at the effect of four weeks of chiropractic care with three to five sessions per week. Patients showed a significant decrease in pain after receiving chiropractic care such as stretching, advice, spinal manipulation and soft tissue massage. They did not show improvement to function in daily life, but they experienced an increase in range of neck movement as a result of the chiropractic treatments.

Clearly chiropractic care may be one very good short-term alternative therapy for people with fibromyalgia. Short-term pain reduction in people with fibromyalgia has been reported in various studies, but the long-term effects have not been confirmed. In the future, the hope is that medical experts will conduct long-term controlled trials to show whether chiropractic therapy is a valid treatment for people with fibromyalgia.

The benefits of using chiropractic care are not conclusive. Since stress may aggravate fibromyalgia, many people feel chiropractic care, acupuncture or even massage therapy can only help a person with fibromyalgia.
