Natural Arthritis Remedies

There is much you can do for the natural control of inflammation. The first and foremost of the home remedies arthritis treatment is water. Yes, water!

The highly moveable joints like those in the fingers, knees, shoulders, hips, wrists, ankles, elbows, ankles and toes are covered with articular cartilage. These are the joints most often affected by osteoarthritis. This material is bluish-white in color and is extremely smooth and slick. In fact, it's about eight times as slick as ice! Cartilage is approximately 80 percent water, similar to a sponge and acts as the shock absorber of your joints. The spongy cartilage soaks up synovial fluid when the joint is at rest. When pressure is placed on the joint, the synovial fluid is squeezed out. The fluid is therefore squeezed in and out with activity and rest. Drinking at least 2 quarts of water a day is critical in order to have adequate synovial fluid.

The second in the natural joint arthritis remedies plan is exercise. While exercise may be painful at first, it is an essential ingredient in a natural arthritis remedy. Do be careful though concerning the type of exercise program you undertake as some exercises can worsen arthritis conditions. One exercise that is great for all forms of arthritis is aquatic exercise, because it is much easier on the joints and muscles. Be sure to consult your physician or physical therapist before starting an arthritis exercise program.

The third home remedies arthritis step is proper nutrition. Avoid foods with arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is a fatty acid that is found primarily in saturated fats and animal products. These products include pork, red meats, egg yolks, poultry, and all dairy products with the exception of non-fat products. Arachidonic acid causes the production of a dangerous form of prostaglandin which actually promotes inflammation.

The reason for the success of highly expensive and dangerous drugs like Celebrex and Vioxx is that they block the COX-2 enzyme. The COX-2 enzyme creates prostaglandins like arachidonic acid does which triggers pain and inflammation in arthritic joints. Eliminating the offending foods from your diet can block the pain before it starts without having to resort to manufactured drugs.

The fourth natural arthritis remedy is weight loss to take the stress off those joints. As a note: The Buffer pH supplement in the Arthritis Strategy Pack actually aids weight loss!

If none of these natural arthritis remedies appeals to you, life can still be pain free. You can attain a significant degree of relief with the Arthritis Strategy Pack.

The natural arthritis remedy Arthritin contains glucosamine sulfate in its synergistic formula. Glucosamine is derived from the exoskeleton of arthropods like the crab. It is used to create a treatment that has been shown in experiments to regenerate damaged cartilage and even reverse the arthritis disease process. Glucosamine occurs naturally in the joint cartilage in humans and has been shown to both inhibit cartilage breakdown and promote cartilage repair.

Glucosamine sulfate, a natural arthritis remedy in itself, is recommended because glucosamine is large celled and not easily absorbed by the body. The addition of sulfate enhances the healing effect of glucosamine by making it more readily absorbable. Glucosamine sulfate is a compound composed of glucose, glutamine (an amino acid) and sulfur. Glucosamine sulfate is used to manufacture proteoglycans. The proteoglycans are the mortar that holds the collagen together and retains the water in the cartilage. Due to the tremendous water content of the proteoglycans, the cartilage absorbs water like a sponge.

In one study , patients receiving glucosamine sulfate had a 71 percent improvement compared to a placebo group. (D’Ambrosio, E. et al, “Glucosamine Sulfate: A Controlled Clinical Investigation in Arthrosis,“ Pharmatherapeutica, v. 2, p. 504, 1981.) There is also anecdotal evidence that MSM vitamins ease arthritis pain.

In another study, 40 patients being treated for osteoarthritis of the knee received 500 mg of glucosamine sulfate three times daily or 1.2 gm a day of the NSAID iboprofen. By the eighth week the glucosamine sulfate was pronounced more effective than the iboprofen. (Vax, AL., “Double-blind Clinical Evaluation of the Relative Efficacy of Glucosamine Sulfate in the Management of Osteoarthritis of the Knee in Outpatients,” Current Medical Resident Opinion, v. 8, p. 145, 1982.)

While it does take longer to feel improvement with a natural arthritis remedy like glucosamine sulfate, as it does with all natural therapies, it does seem to reverse the disease process and results are longer lasting and more pronounced than standard therapy.

Shark cartilage is also helpful as a natural arthritis remedy. The shark is a unique creature in that it apparently is immune to both cancer and arthritis. Scientists have found shark cartilage contains a protein substance that strongly inhibits growth of new blood networks which is called the anti-antigenic factor. This property has been found in research studies to reduce pain and increase mobility in arthritis sufferers.
